I have outed myself as a transit geek, so please don&#8217;t be surprised that twelve of the fifteen pix are of people movers.\u00a0 Why photograph something that yearns for meaning in life when you can point the camera at a Bombardier?<\/p>\n<p>I stand strongly by my view that transit agencies are best judged by unannounced ghetto bus rides at rush hour, but made no attempt to ride any such thing while up north.\u00a0 I was a tourist.\u00a0 I traveled like one.<\/p>\n<p>My sightseeing impressions follow.\u00a0 Please note: I didn&#8217;t interview anyone, didn&#8217;t study local history, have done <em>absolutely no checking<\/em> to insure that this post&#8217;s observations are off base or on the mark.\u00a0 Regard these impressions as worth every penny I&#8217;ll earn for them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p>(\u2022) Portland TriMet maps insist that a &#8216;<a title=\"transit mall\" href=\"http:\/\/trimet.org\/maps\/citycenter.htm\" target=\"_blank\">transit mall<\/a>&#8216; can be found downtown, but I found nothing mall-like in the two dozen blocks so indicated.\u00a0 The blocks are exceptionally well served by transit, true, but they ain&#8217;t no mall.\u00a0 The Galleria is a mall.\u00a0 Malls have muzak and food courts.<\/p>\n<p>If Portland can get away with this kind of linguistic puffery, why can&#8217;t PR flacks in other cities?\u00a0 Why not drape a sign over a snoozing inebriate in Pershing Square and declare him part of the downtown <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>transit esplanade<\/em><\/span>?\u00a0 &#8216;Esplanade&#8217; has a nice ring to it, and no one knows what it means; perfect combination.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_205\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/dcveg_500_418.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-205\" alt=\"DC Vegetarian food cart\" src=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/dcveg_500_418.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/dcveg_500_418.jpg 500w, https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/dcveg_500_418-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DC Vegetarian food cart<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>(\u2022)\u00a0 Portland seems to have dealt with the great food truck controversy by confining such jalopies to specific blocks downtown.\u00a0 The trucks cluster in pods, like lonesome elephants, as mapped at <a title=\"Food Cart Pods in Portland\" href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?msid=217549409037211234366.0004c507e8c6219bb1c38&amp;msa=0\" target=\"_blank\">Food Cart Pods in Portland<\/a>.\u00a0 I let Yelp steer me to the excellent DC Vegetarian.<\/p>\n<p>(\u2022)\u00a0 Portland&#8217;s Aerial Tram is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> a tourist toy, as much as it might look like one from afar.\u00a0 I rode it twice, saw for myself.\u00a0 The proof was in the bleary-eyed early morning apathy of many riders, who never would have stood so calmly for the ride-over-the-freeway shown if they didn&#8217;t take such rides every work day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_203\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-203\" style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tram_333_500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-203\" alt=\"Portland Aerial Tram\" src=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tram_333_500.jpg\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tram_333_500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tram_333_500-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portland Aerial Tram crosses the freeway<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NPR just posted a nice <a title=\"How to Solve a Sky-High Commuting Conundrum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/10\/25\/240216726\/how-to-solve-a-sky-high-commuting-conundrum\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> about the tram.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll let the author tell you about it; after all, NPR presumably cut her a check.\u00a0 I will include another shot, though, of the capacious bike racks next to the tram&#8217;s South Waterfront terminal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bikerack_500_446.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-201\" alt=\"Aerial Tram bike racks\" src=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bikerack_500_446.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bikerack_500_446.jpg 500w, https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/bikerack_500_446-300x267.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bike racks at South Waterfront terminal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>(\u2022)\u00a0 The <a title=\"Seattle Monorail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlemonorail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle Monorail<\/a> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is<\/span> a tourist toy, albeit a pleasant one serviced by agreeable staff.<\/p>\n<p>(\u2022)\u00a0\u00a0 Twenty-three years ago, Seattle completed a 1.3 mile, five station, $455 million <a title=\"Seattle Transit Tunnel Turns Twenty\" href=\"http:\/\/seattletransitblog.com\/2010\/09\/15\/seattles-transit-tunnel-turns-twenty\/\" target=\"_blank\">transit tunnel<\/a> downtown.\u00a0 They must not have figured that we tourists would want to tote our Brownies into a long hole in the ground to ride belching buses, because they did little out-of-the-area hollering about the tunnel once it was finished.\u00a0 Or at least I didn&#8217;t hear any of the hollering.\u00a0 I would have left Seattle entirely ignorant of the tunnel if I hadn&#8217;t happened to spot a sign downtown, and scurried off to investigate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_207\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tunnel_500_299.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-207\" alt=\"Train in transit tunnel\" src=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tunnel_500_299.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tunnel_500_299.jpg 500w, https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tunnel_500_299-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Airport bound train at Westlake Station in Seattle Transit Tunnel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The tunnel serves both trains and buses, as these shots will attest.\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t call it a showpiece, but it was clean and attractive enough, and had plenty of customers.\u00a0 I doubt many tourists would trade a visit to the Space Needle for a ride in the transit tunnel, but a visiting transit geek just might.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_204\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-204\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tunnel2_500_413.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-204\" alt=\"Bus in Seattle Transit Tunnel\" src=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tunnel2_500_413.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tunnel2_500_413.jpg 500w, https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/tunnel2_500_413-300x247.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">71 bus in Seattle Transit Tunnel at Westlake Station<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>(\u2022)\u00a0 With mixed feelings, I confess that the transit highlight of my expedition was certainly my ride on Vancouver&#8217;s <a title=\"SkyTrain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.translink.ca\/en\/Schedules-and-Maps\/SkyTrain.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">SkyTrain<\/a>.\u00a0 I have met many agreeable train operators over the years, and doubt they would regard such a conclusion as welcome news.<\/p>\n<p>SkyTrain, you see, is an automated, driverless system, the world&#8217;s oldest and one of the biggest.\u00a0 The tram at Los Angeles&#8217; Getty Center is similar, but does nothing more ambitious than haul museum goers up and down a short hill. The SkyTrain&#8217;s Burrard-to-King-George run is thirty-seven minutes long.\u00a0 It is a transit artery, like BART or the Red Line.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_202\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-202\" style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/skytrain_440_500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-202\" alt=\"Vancouver TransLink SkyTrain\" src=\"http:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/skytrain_440_500.jpg\" width=\"440\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/skytrain_440_500.jpg 440w, https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/skytrain_440_500-264x300.jpg 264w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canada Line SkyTrain approaches the BridgePort station.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I thought it worked exceedingly well, although one online <a title=\"Why is SkyTrain breaking down so frequently?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vancitybuzz.com\/2013\/07\/why-is-skytrain-breaking-down-so-frequently\/\" target=\"_blank\">scribe<\/a> notes that SkyTrain gear is aging, and breakdowns have become more common.\u00a0 Peak hour &#8216;headways&#8217; &#8212; e.g., the time between trains &#8212; are a mere two to four minutes.\u00a0 Imagine waiting only two minutes for the next airport BART!\u00a0 Tourists can looky-loo out of front window seats, and enjoy views ordinarily reserved for train operators.<\/p>\n<p>(\u2022)\u00a0\u00a0 And finally: I am depressed to report that bus and train interiors in all three cities were in much better shape than what I&#8217;m accustomed to in S.F., and also superior to what I remember in Los Angeles.\u00a0 SFMTA has deployed some new buses in the south end of the city, where I live, but the 14s on Mission are as vile as ever.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photos from a trek northwest earlier this month are online at Portland, Seattle and Vancouver.
