The fictional story of one is told in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Furrows_(film)\"><em>Surcos<\/em><\/a>, a 1951 <a href=\"https:\/\/educomunicacion.es\/cineyeducacion\/realismos.htm\">neo-realist<\/a> film that chronicles the grim disintegration of the P\u00e9rez clan amid the temptations and shams of a heartless Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>A local screenwriter told me about <em>Surcos<\/em> at a pre-pandemic language exchange, described the film in nearly reverent tones, as if he believed that the original film canisters might be suitably interred at <em>Valle de los Ca\u00eddos<\/em> in place of Franco&#8217;s coffin. So I bought the DVD. The sound quality was poor even by early fifties standards, but eventually I found out-of-sync English <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensubtitles.org\/en\/search\/sublanguageid-all\/idmovie-69793\">subtitles<\/a>, and with the movie playing in one window and the subtitles text open in another was able to decipher the Spanish I couldn&#8217;t understand, like a language prof deciphering hieroglyphics.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2382\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2382\" style=\"width: 257px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/theatrical_release_poster_from_wikipedia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2382\" src=\"https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/theatrical_release_poster_from_wikipedia.jpg\" alt=\"Surcos poster (from Wikipedia)\" width=\"257\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/theatrical_release_poster_from_wikipedia.jpg 257w, https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/theatrical_release_poster_from_wikipedia-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Surcos poster (from Wikipedia)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I had to add it to my Spanish movies <a href=\"https:\/\/transitophile.com\/chango\/files\/spanish_film_for_spanish_students.pdf\">list<\/a>. Even if a &#8220;1&#8221; for intelligible dialogue was generous, and even though some segments are guaranteed to offend modern viewers. The only other socially conscious Spanish movie I&#8217;d seen to compare with it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enforex.com\/culture\/los-santos-inocentes.html\"><em>Santos Inocentes<\/em><\/a>, and <em>Santos Inocentes<\/em> had been released a full thirty-three years later, during the democracy.<\/p>\n<p>But how on earth had a controversial movie like <em>Surcos<\/em> gone live under Franco? The English Wikipedia entry credits the support of Spain&#8217;s chief of cinematography, but I didn&#8217;t judge that explanation as adequate. (Even though the <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/diario\/1985\/01\/11\/radiotv\/474246004_850215.html\">support<\/a> put said chief out of a job.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/en\/translation.asp?spen=haber%20gato%20encerrado\"><em>Gato encerrado<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Then a few months ago I bumped into the left-leaning highbrow I mentioned in my <em>Madrid Impressions: Round Six<\/em> post, and our conversation drifted to Spanish cinema. He was amazed that I&#8217;d even heard of <em>Surcos<\/em>. &#8216;And you <em>saw<\/em> it?!,&#8217; he asked twice, as if hadn&#8217;t digested the first &#8216;yes.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>And then, as if he&#8217;d read my mind, he volunteered an answer to the mystery, or at least a major puzzle piece:<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;You know why they were able to make that movie? Because the director was Falange.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>So maybe that explained it.<\/p>\n<p>The far-right <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Falangism\">Falange<\/a> had been core members of the nationalist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nationalist_faction_(Spanish_Civil_War)\">faction<\/a> that had brought Franco to power. Franco <em>owed<\/em> the Falange. A socially conscious movie today embraced by many on Spain&#8217;s Left had thus come from Spain&#8217;s Right: a stern Catholic morality story, of a decent, God-fearing family brought to ruin by big city vices. I am reminded of fifteenth century painter Hieronymus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hieronymus-bosch.org\/\">Bosch<\/a> (aka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museodelprado.es\/coleccion\/artista\/el-bosco\/c9716e4a-4c24-44dd-ac65-44bc4661c8b5\"><em>El Bosco<\/em><\/a> at the Prado) whose nearly psychedelic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hieronymus_Bosch#\/media\/File:Hieronymus_Bosch_-_The_Garden_of_Earthly_Delights_-_Hell.jpg\">depictions<\/a> of hellfire would have been freewheeling even by sixties Haight-Ashbury standards. But (although little is known of his life) Bosch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/news\/media\/horrors-and-hells-hieronymus-bosch\">appears<\/a> to have been a doctrinaire Catholic.<\/p>\n<p><em>Surcos<\/em> won <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anexo:Medallas_del_CEC_de_1951\">awards<\/a>, but outraged the church and many of the director&#8217;s peers. Nieves Conde discusses the personal price paid in the interview clips that begin at the twenty-one minute mark in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtve.es\/play\/videos\/version-espanola\/version-espanola-surcos\/2886775\/\">episode<\/a> of\u00a0 RTVE&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtve.es\/play\/videos\/version-espanola\/\"><em>Versi\u00f3n espa\u00f1ola<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other titles in my Spanish films list deserve to be hollered about, but if I mention one I&#8217;ll have to mention a dozen. For <em>Surcos<\/em>, I&#8217;ll make an exception. I&#8217;m not a film buff, but I&#8217;ve seen my share of classics, the English-language movies one would expect to find on a list of &#8216;greatest movies of the 1950s.&#8217; Surcos ranks alongside them, and I never would have heard of it if I hadn&#8217;t moved to Spain. It&#8217;s also a treasure of Madrid nostalgia, with scenes filmed in Lavapies, Atocha and in a vintage <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corrala\"><em>corrala<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I bought the Blu-Ray edition to write this post, discovered that the English subtitles dated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensubtitles.org\/en\/search\/sublanguageid-all\/idmovie-69793\">31\/05\/2018<\/a> come close to syncing with the recording, if I dial in g-650 to delay the subtitles by 650 ms in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/VLC_media_player\">VLC<\/a>. I know of no version with Spanish subtitles.
