Alsacia straphangers can expect weekday subways every three to five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metromadrid.es\/en\/linea\/linea-2#line-timetable\">minutes<\/a> for a twenty-six minute shlep to the Sol transit hub in Madrid&#8217;s center.<\/p>\n<p>A bedroom community. Maybe a few notches up from the mean, but representative. A visitor can pass many, many acres of similar housing in the city&#8217;s <em>afueras<\/em>: high-rise, high-density complexes that can feed armies of potential riders to a heavy rail transit artery, that can&#8217;t make financial sense without lots of traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Spain cities grew vertically. Journalists here have told the story: in <a href=\"https:\/\/especiales.eldiario.es\/espana-vive-en-pisos\/\">elDiario<\/a>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2020\/06\/05\/icon_design\/1591384531_919870.html\">El Pa\u00eds<\/a>, and in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elconfidencial.com\/cultura\/2017-09-17\/franquismo-madrid-franco-urbanismo_1444108\/\">El Confidencial<\/a> article recounting the post-Civil War flood of <em>campesinos<\/em> into the capital. (Which may be for the best long-term in L.A., given the region&#8217;s notorious earthquake risks.) The only similar residential development that comes to mind in L.A. is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Park_La_Brea%2C_Los_Angeles\">Park La Brea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Los-Angeles-Automobile-Scott-Bottles\/dp\/0520073959\">Books<\/a> are available to explain why and how Los Angeles grew as it did,\u00a0 but I&#8217;m afraid they won&#8217;t help Angelenos concerned about SoCal mobility today. If Dad&#8217;s in a coma &#8217;cause Cuddles the Hippo trampled his head at the zoo, his bereaved offspring won&#8217;t rouse him by learning how Cuddles got out of her enclosure. The lawyers will want to know, and the zoo will, but the knowledge won&#8217;t help family members. What&#8217;s done is done. Hence, this entry. This blog <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>is<\/strong><\/span> called transitophile, after all.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Alsacia metro station belongs to the outskirts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arcos_(Madrid)\">Arcos<\/a> barrio in Madrid&#8217;s San Blas-Canillejas <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anexo:Distritos_de_Madrid\">district<\/a>. An <em>internauta<\/em> wielding a mouse in Google Maps Street View will find a variety of high-density housing in Arcos, some as attractive as this, some significantly worse.<\/p>\n<p>But, everyone gets a nice metro station. Not a Prado-ready work of art, but clean, functional, maintained.
