I may have more to hold forth about later in the year.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime: another installment of favorite words and sayings in <em>espa\u00f1ol<\/em>:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.significados.com\/mas-sabe-el-diablo-por-viejo-que-por-diablo\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Mas sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. &#8216;The devil knows more by being old than by being the devil.&#8217; I&#8217;m old and creaky enough now to vouch for the wisdom in this saying. Stick around, keep your eyes open and you&#8217;ll recognize patterns that might have eluded you in your salad days.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/expresionesyrefranes.com\/2007\/05\/27\/ser-como-el-perro-del-hortelano-que-ni-come-ni-deja-comer\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Ser como el perro del hortelano<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. A Spanish friend here had a boyfriend who wouldn&#8217;t commit, but became fiercely jealous if she dated other men. That&#8217;s acting like a &#8216;perro del hortelano,&#8217; after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lope_de_Vega\">Lope de Vega<\/a>&#8216;s eponymous 1618 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Dog_in_the_Manger_(play)\">play<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aerocolombia.com\/2011\/09\/24\/dar-papaya-o-no-dar-papaya\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Dar papaya<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. A Colombian expression for an injudicious display of wealth. He who swaggers into a city&#8217;s worst bar with glittering Rolex and jewelry <em>est\u00e1 dando papaya<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundeu.es\/recomendacion\/buenismo-malismo-angelismo-irenismo\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Buenismo \/ buenista<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. The <em>buenista<\/em> insists on seeing the world as a more benevolent place than is suggested by evidence. Not unlike &#8216;seeing the world through rose colored glasses,&#8217; but weightier, and with a wider scope &#8230; and perhaps likelier to spring from the lips of a do-badder who seeks philosophical cover for shoddy conduct.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ud71g__1hLE\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Discapacitado capilar<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. The Spanish equivalent of &#8216;follicly challenged,&#8217; shared with resigned humor by a fellow Madrid baldie.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/en\/translation.asp?spen=matasanos\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Matasanos<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. For a quack doctor. Literally, &#8216;kills the healthy.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/lameculismo\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Lameculismo<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. English has &#8216;ass kisser&#8217; for &#8216;lameculos,&#8217; but only Spanish has a word for the practice, the custom, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>syndrome<\/em><\/span> of ass kissing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/strommeninc.com\/hay-cuatro-gatos-spanish-idiom-translation\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Hay cuatro gatos<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. There&#8217;s no one here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/context.reverso.net\/translation\/spanish-english\/por+cuatro+perras\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Por cuatro perras<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. For next to nothing, as in a sale. Again with &#8216;cuatro.&#8217; Hmmm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cvc.cervantes.es\/lengua\/refranero\/ficha.aspx?Par=59297&amp;Lng=0\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Pleitos tengas y los ganes<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. An oldie but goodie, branded as &#8216;in disuse&#8217; by the Cervantes center, and recognized by only some of my Spanish chums here. &#8216;Lawsuits you have, and you win them&#8217; might be a literal translation, and could be used here as a threat, or an insult, suggesting that such suits are so costly that the winner can only lose.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordreference.com\/es\/en\/translation.asp?spen=politicastro\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Politicastro\/a<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Carpetbagger politician. Americans can consult a frequently nauseating <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/political_ads\">repository<\/a> of past campaign commercials at archive.org for recordings of Yankee <em>politicastros<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And finally:<\/p>\n<p><em>Pues, nada<\/em> translates as &#8216;well, nothing,&#8217; but is also what your Spain friends may say when a conversation is petering out and it&#8217;s time to hang up, or leave, or ask for the check.<\/p>\n<p>So: <em>pues, nada, amigos, \u00a1y hasta la pr\u00f3xima!<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been busy with other things of late, haven&#8217;t taken time to post, and admit I write today mostly to keep this URL from oxidizing, or sprouting green fungi.
