The lingo may have originated in Espa\u00f1a, but regional differences have evolved among the 400+ million speakers worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>I have encountered some in Spain, post this New Year&#8217;s Day to tell the tale. Expect little of interest if your Castellano ends at the bottom of the Taco Bell menu, aside from my discussion of <em>hombre<\/em> at post end.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>GREETINGS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Hola, buenas<\/em> will serve morning, noon and night here.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That doesn&#8217;t <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mean<\/span> anything,&#8221; you object. &#8220;&#8216;Hello, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">good<\/span>.&#8217; What kind of a greeting is that?!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A common one. You&#8217;re free to say <em>Buenos d\u00edas, buenas tardes, buenas noches<\/em>, and many do, but I live here, regularly receive and offer <em>Hola, buenas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hasta luego<\/em>\u00a0seems to be the standard goodbye. I infrequently hear <em>adios<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>VALE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Vale<\/em> = okay. That&#8217;s all. No more, no less. Pronounced vah-lay.<\/p>\n<p>I will know I have settled in when I catch myself saying <em>vale<\/em>\u00a0without forethought. So far, I haven&#8217;t. Spaniards say <em>vale<\/em> as often and effortlessly as Americans say &#8216;okay.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>USE OF VOSOTROS FORM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Vosotros = informal you, plural. Non-existent in the Americas. Maestros had warned darkly of vosotros-izing in Spain, but I let myself imagine that uses would be rare, saved for special occasions, like eggnog punch recipes.<\/p>\n<p>Wrong! Spaniards &#8216;os&#8217; each other, tack <em>-\u00e1is<\/em> and <em>-\u00e9is<\/em> onto verb roots with abandon. Get ready.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">CABALLERO<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like <em>se\u00f1or<\/em>, but more formal and (perhaps) flattering. Expect to be <em>caballero<\/em>&#8216;d half to death if shopping for anything in a gift box while male and gray-haired at Corte Ingl\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t remember hearing <em>caballero<\/em> in Mexico. I liked the mouth feel of the word, but also thought it sounded a bit fruity, akin to calling a cabbie &#8216;your kind sir&#8217; while offering a tip. I have used it gingerly when addressing other males, and the occasional blinks received in response suggest that I still don&#8217;t quite get conventions of use.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>TRANQUILO<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>(1) <em>Calm down.<\/em> (2) What you&#8217;ll say to magnanimously accept the apology of the red-faced stranger who just stepped on your spats on the metro.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a1D\u00cdGAME!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Said in lieu of\u00a0<em>Hello<\/em> when answering a phone, or\u00a0<em>How can I help you?<\/em> when addressing customers at a store counter.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">T\u00da VS. USTED<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They both mean &#8220;you,&#8221; but it&#8217;s &#8220;t\u00fa&#8221; between pals, &#8220;usted&#8221; with the big boss. I used to think that English offered no equivalent, believe now that it does. Consider:<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve forgotten exactly when it happened and can&#8217;t find anything online to confirm that it happened at all, but my aging memory cells insist: at some point in my years in the states, sales people stopped calling me &#8220;Mr. Adams&#8221; and started calling me &#8220;Tim.&#8221; I hadn&#8217;t changed; they had. For reasons unknown, they likely had decided that the casual salutation paid off: informality might alienate a few customers, but would win bankable trust from many more. (e.g.: &#8220;The poor dumb schmuck will think I&#8217;m his pal!&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>T\u00fa vs usted may not be all that different here. A fortyish Asturian suppressed irritation while <em>tutear<\/em>&#8216;d by a bank teller &#8212; &#8220;You don&#8217;t <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">know<\/span> me,&#8221; thought he &#8212; but noted that said tellers were also<em> tutear<\/em>ing everyone else. Madrile\u00f1os have assured me that a gray hair like me can &#8220;t\u00fa&#8221; with impunity, but a necktied hotelier frowned when so addressed. I switched quickly to usted; the frown disappeared. A judgment call.<\/p>\n<p>Usted does not necessarily imply respect, may signify only formality, reserve, distance. Consider the consistent use of &#8216;usted&#8217; in an unfriendly 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/m.youtube.com\/watch?v=a3LNoROKAW0\">debate<\/a> between Pedro S\u00e1nchez and Mariano Rajoy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u00a1ESO ES!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>That&#8217;s right. \u00a0You&#8217;ve got it.<\/em> \u00a0 Spoken as an Anglophile would pronounce the distress signal SOS, but with a pause and a speed bump after the first &#8216;S.&#8217; \u00a0(e.g., ESS-oh-ess.)<\/p>\n<p>And now, the most interesting, at least to me:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>HOMBRE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Hombre<\/em> = man. That&#8217;s what I learned in Spanish 1A, and I remember no speech, text, or lesson in the Americas suggesting that I regard <em>hombre<\/em> as anything more.<\/p>\n<p>Not in Spain. \u00a0Both sexes can expect to be addressed as <em>hombre<\/em>, sometimes almost meaninglessly &#8212;\u00a0\u00e0 la the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/what-do-interjections-look-like-1857153\">interjectional<\/a> use of <em>Let&#8217;s get real!<\/em>\u00a0&#8212; but sometimes (and pause with me, please, as I choose my words with care) to request a candid facing-of-facts while implying listener sympathy.<\/p>\n<p>A few invented Spanglish examples:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course you can go at 9:00 on the dot, but <em>hombre<\/em>, you know they won&#8217;t be ready by then.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Hombre<\/em>, you know he won&#8217;t be faithful.
